NASA Is Sending The First Dummies Around The Moon

It’s one small step for mannequins, one giant leap for mannequin kind. In 2020, as NASA launches the Orion spacecraft as part of Artemis I – the first in a series of increasingly complex missions that will hopefully lead to the first woman and the next man landing on the Moon (and eventually Mars) – two “phantom” women will be on board. The mannequins, named Helga and Zohar, will travel further than any human has before on a spacecraft that will cover more distance than any spacecraft designed for humans has ever flown. The two dummies will be sitting in the passenger seats with the important task of being blasted with radiation during their trip, in order to measure the effectiveness of new suits designed …

Nothing Captures the Raw Power and Beauty of Waves Like 4K Slow Motion

“MOCEAN” is an incredible short film by Chris Bryan that captures the raw power and beauty of waves. All images where shot using a Phantom Flex 4K camera with Leica Summilux lenses and Bryan’s custom underwater housings. On Vimeo he adds: I love filming in the ocean more than anything, it’s not just a job, it’s a passion. And sometimes it’s nice just to document waves without surfers riding them. The feeling of jumping off the rocks in the dark by myself just to capture the very first rays of light hitting the ocean without another soul in sight is unexplainable, it’s one of the most amazing feelings ever, it’s like my own personal therapy.   And to realize that …

New Technology Allows Humans To “See” The World Through Animal Eyes

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article incorrectly identified the bee/human viewpoints in the image below. Ever wonder what a honeybee sees as it darts through fields of flowers? Wonder may soon become a reality thanks to innovative new software that gives humans a chance to “see” the world through the eyes of animals. Until now, it has largely been difficult to understand how animals perceive the environment around them. Most animals have different visual systems than humans do. Because of this, it is unclear how species see complex visual information or color patterns that drive their behavior. That’s why researchers from the Universities of Queensland and Exeter have developed Quantitative Color Pattern Analysis (QCPA) to allow people to process and …

CERN Experiment Upgrades Will Help Hunt The Mysterious X17, Fifth Force Particle

Over the last two years, a Hungarian group of physicists at the Atomki Institute have observed two examples of a mysterious particle, dubbed X17, that hints at a fifth force of nature. An experiment at CERN called NA64 has also been searching for this particle, and now new upgrades may help further probe the existence (or not) of this particle. In the NA64 experiment, scientists shoot a beam of tens of billions of electrons at a fixed target. The collision between the electrons and the atoms in the target produce particles, potentially those we have never seen before. So far, NA64 has not found any trace of X17, but even no detection is useful. It tells researchers that if the particle does indeed exist, there are certain values …

Of course Facebook and Google want to solve social problems. Theyre hungry for our data | Nathalie Olah

Giving big tech companies power over the NHS or the climate crisis wont build a fairer world. 2019 Ends Warmest Decade On Record, State Of The Global Climate Report Warns

As COP25, the United Nation’s climate conference, kicks off in Madrid this week, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a provisional statement of its annual State of the Climate Report 2019. It reveals that the last decade has been truly record-breaking in many ways. 2019 concludes a decade of unprecedented record temperatures, retreating ice cover, atmospheric pollution, and high-impact weather driven by human activities, the report notes. Not only is the last decade set to be the warmest on record, but in its last year, the global average temperature was 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, perilously close to the 1.5°C limit scientists have warned we need to aim for to avoid catastrophic change. The trends are clear. Since the 1980s, each …
