In this brilliant real-time visualization, we start with our planet to grasp just how fast light travels (300,000 km per second/186,000 miles per second). However, things quickly get mind-boggling when we use nearby objects in space like the moon, mars, and sun. The visualization was created by Dr. James O’Donoghue who is a Planetary Scientist at the Japanese Space Agency, JAXA. Before that, the good doc worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Oh Good, Boston Dynamics Has Robots Doing Parkour Now

In this incredible demonstration by Boston Dynamics’ robot, Atlas, we see the machine executing a series of gymnastic/parkour maneuvers. Boston Dynamics adds: Atlas uses its whole body — legs, arms, torso — to perform a sequence of dynamic maneuvers that form a gymnastic routine. We created the maneuvers using new techniques that streamline the development process. First, an optimization algorithm transforms high-level descriptions of each maneuver into dynamically-feasible reference motions.   Then Atlas tracks the motions using a model predictive controller that smoothly blends from one maneuver to the next. Photo Wake-Up is a research project by Chung-Yi Weng, Brian Curless, and Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman of the University of Washington. Per their paper’s abstract: We present a method and application for animating a human subject from a single photo. E.g., the character can walk out, run, sit, or jump in 3D. The key contributions of this paper are: 1) an application of viewing and animating humans in single photos in 3D, 2) a novel 2D warping method to deform a posable template body model to fit the person’s complex silhouette to create an animatable mesh, and 3) a method for handling partial self occlusions.
